Emad has just asked me about my AIESEC history, I thought I would post it for all to know:
The first thing about me you'll need to know is that i'm a workaholic. I haven't gone overseas in 16 years simply because my time away from school has been busy with working on something or another.
For AIESEC this has meant in my first month I wanted to open up a new local at a new university that was build that year & got Insight XP Certified. Then I was selected as corporate development director & helped fundraise & with logistics with a small event the next month.
Then, being September, I helped a lot with recruitment, both for members & for SNs, my attitude with AIESEC has always been that the work has to get done, so if there is no one else available to do it, i'll make myself available. I like to do things strategically, so rather then just recruit by sitting at a booth, I would talk to professors, make class room presentations, & document what was done to keep things sustainable.
While this was going on, I started joining communities on AIESEC.net & helping with servicing interns with airport pick ups, helping them settle in by getting them there cell phone, taking them around to find an apartment, showing them around the city. While doing all of this I would think, how can we do it better, for example, rather then go to a bunch of different banks why not explain AIESEC to one bank & have all the interns go there, or if we are giving all this business to one cell phone company, why not get something out of it for AIESEC.
So I made my portfolio CD. I started with warm contacts, & was really keen on making a list of companies to contact, like over the weekend, & then contacting them during the week. I changed my school schedule to have most business hours off to do AIESEC work. Most of the results from that time was getting a lot of meetings.
I ran for VPCD, but was not selected. I was at my first AIESEC conference, a National one, & was very serious since it was electing our current MCP (Araz). I had a great time, personally & professionally. I started talking to the chambers of commerces & went on many networking events & made some speeches on AIESEC.
There was a national conference that May & we changed to the new branding, a new CRM system, & implemented AIESEC XP. I continued my AIESEC.net readings, I am currently on more than 130 communities, & basically learned from what has happened & about what is going on so I can help implement something that could help us here.
Another local in my city was hosting the regional conference & fundraising was not going well so people started quitting the OC team. I was asked to help & I did. I became the OCVPCD & really enjoyed doing AIESEC work all summer (even though I was taking classes!) I also helped logistically run the conference, it was the largest one we had in 12 years & went very well. By the end of the fall, I had been directly linked to 6 internships & have at least 2 in the pipeline.
I ran for LCP, I wasn't selected by 1 vote, but knew that some of the things I wanted to do involved my current role, Membership Quality Board Team Leader. So I applied & got it! At that national conference my local was awarded with the co local of the year, & the marketing team of the year (so the work I put in was being recognized!) We elected Shirley as our next MCP. This was an interesting conference because last year everyone got to vote & this year, the MQB, held people accountable to our minimum standards, & we had 14/25 vote.
I wanted to help change that & was glad I was the MQBTL since I could. In my first month with this role, I helped change most of our templates, made a new training guide for my team to use & am reporting on more things then were done last year. I am also trying to implement a member satisfaction survey & mandatory exchange evaluations.
Then I applied for a CEED. I know I can handle it since the MQB position is not too busy. Now that I got selected to come to Pakistan, I have started preparing by researching about the current reality, talking to the LCPs & making a contact list of companies in Canada who would be interested in taking on interns from Pakistan, & finding companies in Pakistan which I can contact once I get there.
I am working on making a calander so that I can be as effective as possible once I get there. I do plan on working full time once I am there. This will be more than 8 hours a day, including the weekends.
